“You have endometriosis.”

I had never heard of it, couldn’t spell it and could barely pronounce it when I first got the diagnosis. I looked it up and read how it could cause debilitating pain, and infertility, and that there was no cure.

It had been many years leading up to finally having a name to explain all the pain and symptoms I had been experiencing since I was a teen – painful and abnormal periods, horrible headaches, digestive problems, food sensitivities, fatigue, and a bloated abdomen. During my 20’s the symptoms kept getting worse.

I’ll never forget one night I spent hours in intense pain from what I later learned was a ruptured ovarian cyst, lying curled up into a ball on the floor, feeling like I had an axe in my lower abdomen.

Now in my 30’s, after other procedures, a laparoscopy finally confirmed endometriosis and revealed cysts on both ovaries, and also many fibroid tumors in my uterus. I remember reading the surgical report describing that my pelvis was full of scar tissue, causing the reproductive organs to literally be fused together, and wondering why and how all this ugly damage could have been happening inside, while I looked so healthy on the outside.

I was very fortunate to have skilled surgical treatment for my condition, but was also recommended the hormonal treatment of Depo Provera to help keep the endometriosis suppressed. I lasted 9 months and by then I was going completely crazy from the side effects – weight gain, digestive problems, terrible skin breakouts, and the worst mood changes I had ever had in my life.

I felt like my mind and body had been hi-jacked!

To make matters worse I had been diagnosed with an underactive thyroid and benign breast cysts. Now I was really getting worried about what the future held.

I knew that underlying everything, my hormones were SERIOUSLY imbalanced, that all these issues were inter-connected, and decided to learn everything I could about my conditions and how I could manage my health using natural methods.

I needed to feel like I was taking back control of my body.

Hope for Healing

At that time there was very little information available about endometriosis. But I learned about “estrogen dominance”, and how this imbalance of estrogen was likely fueling these inflammatory growths in my body.

I researched endlessly over the years on everything I could find about the root causes of endometriosis and hormone imbalances and learned how to use the right nutrition, supplements, non-toxic personal and household products, and natural pain management.

The symptoms soon became less and less and I was able to manage my symptoms and live an active life, without further hormonal intervention or pain medications.

But then I got off track….I had recovered so well in my 30’s, I took it for granted, and I gradually wandered away from the nutrition and healthy self-care I had been using. Bad move!

As I got older, I began to experience hormone balance and digestive problems again, along with increased pain in my body.

I had an ovarian cyst for the first time in 12 years and I didn’t want to have surgery again. I decided I needed to overhaul my healthcare – Version 2.0!

I didn’t want to tackle these changes alone this time; the information was too overwhelming for me. Over the years I had been exposed to many amazing health practitioners, so I took the opportunity to join a coaching program for women’s health, and that’s when my life really changed on multiple levels!

I learned many new tools to maximize my nutrition without feeling deprived, what foods and habits were creating inflammation and imbalance in my body, and how to tune in to what my body and mind needed to heal. It was calming to let someone else lead me through so much information.

I experienced how having empathetic and expert support kept me accountable and encouraged, and by the time I was finished the program not only was I in better health and balance (even my cyst resolved on its own shortly after that) – I was left with a yearning to be able to help other women experience the same kind of life-changing, personalized care.

After decades in the business world, I changed direction and pursued training in women’s health and nutrition, and received certification as a Transformational Nutrition Coach™ through the NANP accredited Institute of Transformational Nutrition, founded by Cynthia Pasquella. Following that I completed certification as a Women’s Health and Nutrition Coach, as well as further specialized courses in functional nutrition for chronic pelvic pain, vulvo-vaginal pain and dermatology, and pre-conception preparation through the Integrative Women’s Health Institute founded by Jessica Drummond, MPT, CCN, CHC.  I also completed training in the Teach the Hormone Cure program, developed by Dr. Sara Gottfried, Harvard-trained MD, and author of the New York Times bestselling books, The Hormone Cure and The Hormone Reset Diet and am studying Herbal Medicine for Women with Dr. Aviva Romm, MD.
